Evolution of Software Documentation

Software documentation has significantly changed over the past few decades. Originally, it consisted mostly of PDFs and static plaintext formats. Nowadays, it’s much more user-friendly and interactive. Yet, developing these resources can still be a significant time commitment.

Han Wang and Hahnbee Lee, both experienced developers and entrepreneurs, understand this struggle well.

During the 2010s, companies like Stripe, HashiCorp, and Twilio raised the standard for developer content. As Wang noted, “They showed that exceptional developer experience isn’t just a luxury; it’s a key competitive advantage.” Since then, many companies have tried to catch up, but it’s no easy task.

Introducing Mintlify

To simplify the process of creating documentation and make their lives easier, Wang and Lee founded Mintlify. This platform offers a suite of documentation-authoring tools that include the ability to auto-generate documentation directly from codebases.

“In the 2020s, the expectations for documentation are evolving once again,” Wang explained. “Now, it’s not only about the user interface. It also concerns how developers and editors interact with content, changing due to advancements in AI.”

An AI-Driven Approach

Wang and Lee first crossed paths in college at Cornell University. While Lee studied computer science, Wang pursued a degree in information science. Wang’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish two companies: FoodFul, which focused on remote livestock monitoring, and People, a platform for building customer communities. After the acquisition of People by Bettermode, a user engagement firm, Wang transitioned to a role as a partner at Bain Capital Ventures.

In 2021, Wang left Bain, coinciding with the conceptualization of Mintlify. With funding from Bain and other investors, including Sourcegraph co-founder Quinn Slack, they set out to establish the platform as a business.

The Features of Mintlify

At its core, Mintlify assists developers in composing guides, API references, SDK documents, and even chatbots powered by OpenAI’s API to detail their software and services. The platform offers built-in components and templates for straightforward document formatting. Additionally, it structures documentation to integrate seamlessly with a codebase.

Challenges and Criticism

However, not everyone is entirely satisfied with Mintlify’s automation capabilities. Tim Anderson from DevClass expressed that the platform occasionally adds comments of “little value” to codebases and has, at times, repeated inaccurate sentences multiple times in documentation. Others have noted that Mintlify may struggle with poorly organized or written code.

Despite the criticisms, Wang emphasizes the potential of the platform over its limitations. He recognizes that while AI can significantly aid the documentation process, human oversight remains crucial.

“Documentation will evolve automatically based on support messages and product feedback,” Wang stated. “AI will assist companies in creating technical content that aligns with product changes and user insights.”

Mintlify’s Growing Presence

Mintlify is not alone in its quest to innovate software documentation. Several other startups, including Guidde and Documatic, are also making strides. Guidde, for example, employs AI to create software documentation videos, while Documatic generates changelogs and explanations from code.

When asked about competition, Wang highlighted Mintlify’s robust customer base. The company serves well-known names such as Anthropic, Cursor, Perplexity, Zapier, and Fidelity, reaching over 1.5 million developers each month.

The Future of Documentation with AI

Looking ahead, Wang hinted at exciting developments on the horizon for Mintlify. He remarked, “Every documentation system now needs to have an AI chat feature for immediate question handling. However, we intend to delve deeper into this concept.”

He also shared that content will further evolve to enhance support, chatbot capabilities, and generative AI functionalities. “We’re looking at personalizing content for each user,” Wang added, highlighting their vision for a tailored documentation experience.

Funding and Development

To realize this vision, Mintlify successfully closed an $18.5 million Series A funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Bain and Y Combinator. This brings the total amount raised to $21.7 million. Wang mentioned that these additional funds would be directed toward expanding their 11-person team and driving product development.

While Wang chose not to disclose specific details about Mintlify’s revenue or profitability, he emphasized their focus on operating efficiently. “Although we did not need fundraising, we wanted to strategically boost growth,” he concluded.

Mintlify’s innovative tools and AI-driven approach hold promise for the future of software documentation, providing a more efficient way for developers to create and maintain their content. As technology continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how Mintlify adapts and shapes the industry.
