Sightful Shifts Focus: Embraces Xreal Air Software over Spacetop G1

Sightful Cancels Spacetop G1

Sightful has recently made headlines with its decision to cancel the Spacetop G1, an innovative screenless laptop intended to pair with the Xreal Air Software. This shift also comes with the promise of refunds for all preorder deposits. Initially, the Spacetop G1 was going to retail for $1900 and utilize the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset along with Sightful’s proprietary Spacetop OS. However, the company has opted not to move forward with hardware development.

Refunds Available for Customers

For those who preordered, Sightful has reached out to offer refunds on their $100 deposits. The company confirms that it will no longer ship any related hardware for the Spacetop G1. Instead, the focus has now shifted away from hardware and toward enhancing the capabilities of Xreal Air Software. This new direction emphasizes software solutions over physical devices.

New Direction: A Focus on Software Development

As part of its strategic pivot, Sightful is focusing on creating exciting software designed for the Xreal Air 2 Ultra, compatible with Windows laptops. This upgraded Xreal Air Software will be optimized for laptops equipped with a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), harnessing power from Qualcomm Snapdragon, Intel Core Ultra, or AMD Ryzen AI chipsets to maximize user experience.

Unveiling the Spacetop Name

The newly developed software will continue the original vision by taking on the name Spacetop. This software aims not just to showcase virtual windows, but to deeply integrate with Windows applications, expanding functionality. Users will be able to interact with multiple Windows applications in a more immersive and expansive virtual environment.

Connecting Your Devices: The Integration Process

Users can easily connect their Xreal glasses to laptops via USB-C for the Spacetop experience. The laptop supplies both power and computing resources, ensuring the system works seamlessly as soon as it’s connected.

What to Expect from the Spacetop Software

The Xreal glasses currently allow users to display their laptop screens as a head-fixed virtual monitor. The new Xreal Air Software enhances this experience significantly, offering features like:

  • 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) positional tracking
  • Ability to spawn multiple Windows applications in an expansive virtual workspace

Understanding the Shift in Strategy

The founders of Sightful, Tamir Berliner and Tomer Kahan, both of whom hail from Magic Leap, made this transition due to remarkable advancements in laptop technology. A growing number of laptops are equipped with NPUs, allowing efficient handling of 6DoF tracking that doesn’t compromise performance or battery life. This strategic change caters to a broader audience by leveraging existing consumer laptops, rather than pushing a premium, single-purpose device priced around $1200 post-glasses cost.

Navigating the Limitations of AR Technology

While the Spacetop software heralds promising advancements, it also contends with certain challenges. A significant limitation of transparent AR technology is its field of view. Similar technologies have shown that floating windows are only clear when positioned several meters away. Users will need to adapt their method of managing applications, adjusting their viewpoint and head position more frequently than with traditional monitors.

The Trade-off Inherent in Transparent AR

One major trade-off with transparent AR involves a more demanding interaction style compared to opaque headsets with passthrough cameras. Though some industry prototypes have received accolades for addressing specific hurdles, achieving large-scale production remains a complex challenge for everyone involved.

What Lies Ahead: Timeline for Release

Sightful is planning to roll out the Spacetop software for Windows by year-end. However, it will initially support laptops featuring NPUs, identified as CoPilot+ PCs by Microsoft.

By prioritizing software over hardware, Sightful is positioning itself to adapt to dynamic market trends while enhancing the user experience with AR technology. 🚀
