Stability AI Upgrades Stable Diffusion Models with Amazon Bedrock 🚀

Stability AI is currently navigating a challenging landscape in the competitive realm of text-to-image generative AI tools. In a significant development, the company has announced an expanded partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This collaboration will introduce three advanced text-to-image generative AI models to the Amazon Bedrock service.

Previously, Stability AI offered its earlier yet effective SDXL model on Amazon Bedrock. Now, the company is set to roll out a suite of cutting-edge models, including:

  • Stable Image Ultra
  • Stable Diffusion 3 Large
  • Stable Image Core

Each of these models is designed to address various needs, offering solutions ranging from ultra-realistic imagery to large-scale asset generation. This diverse lineup provides enterprise users with tailored options to fit specific requirements.

Understanding the New Stable Diffusion Model Portfolio

Since its inception, Stability AI has evolved significantly, especially in the past year with the introduction of various iterations of the Stable Diffusion model. Initially, the company launched the original Stable Diffusion, but the evolving landscape has prompted a series of updates.

Like many generative AI models, the differences among these versions often come down to their size and capabilities:

  • Larger models: Typically offer more power and capability but require greater resources and investment.
  • Smaller models: Generally more accessible, enabling operation on consumer-grade equipment or enterprise-tier GPUs.

This year’s advancements include the unveiling of Stable Diffusion 3.0, which was initially previewed in February and made fully available via an API in April. Following that, in June, Stability AI introduced Stable Diffusion Medium and rebranded its original model as Stable Diffusion Large. Additionally, Stable Diffusion Ultra was launched discreetly through an API.

Stable Image Ultra represents our pinnacle model,” stated Scott Trowbridge, VP of business development at Stability AI. “It combines the strengths of SD3 Large with advanced workflows, delivering the highest quality images. This premium offering is tailored for sectors needing unparalleled visual quality, such as marketing, advertising, and architecture.”

Contrastingly, the Stable Image Core model is based on the SDXL framework, prioritizing speed and cost-effectiveness. Currently, Stability AI is not offering Stable Diffusion 3 Medium on Amazon Bedrock, at least in the initial rollout.

According to Trowbridge, “SD3 Medium is a model with two billion parameters, perfectly suited for operation on consumer PCs and laptops, as well as enterprise-tier GPUs. Users can self-host it or access it via our API.”

Expanding Market Opportunities for Stability AI

Over the past year, Stability AI has been actively exploring avenues to broaden its market presence. In December 2023, the company launched a new membership model designed to generate revenue and commercial opportunities. Additionally, the introduction of the Stable Assistant chatbot facilitates user access to various models, with a pricing structure based on usage through either the API or the Stable Assistant platform.

Amid these developments, Stability AI has faced several operational hurdles. March saw the resignation of founder and CEO Emad Mostaque, followed by the appointment of Prem Akkaraju as the new CEO in June, along with an influx of fresh capital.

As of now, the comparative costs of running these models on Amazon Bedrock versus other platforms remain unclear, as Stability AI has yet to provide specific insights into pricing discussions.

Nevertheless, these multiple pathways to market represent significant potential for enhancing Stability AI’s revenue streams. The partnership with Amazon Bedrock is likely just the first of several collaborations Stability AI will pursue with cloud service providers.

“Stability AI is continuously exploring methods to enhance access to our models, including partnerships with cloud service providers, system integrators, and other model service providers,” Trowbridge highlighted.
